چکیده

Nonspreading wave packets for Rydberg electrons are predicted in rotating molecules with electric dipole moments. We have named them the Trojan wave packets since their stability is due to the same mechanism that governs the motion of the Trojan asteroids in the Sun-Jupiter system. Unlike all previously predicted Trojan wave packets in atoms, molecular Trojan states do not require external fields for their existence. [S0031-9007(96)01683-3]

Classical limit states of the helium atom

The techniques of Rydberg electronic wave packets are used to explore the classical limit states of helium. A class of shape-preserving orbits is studied under the classical adiabatic approximation that separates the dynamics of the two electrons. These states form the classical basis for two-electron wave packet states whose hydrogenic counterparts are shown to be elliptic states in the presen...

Chirped-pulse millimeter-wave spectroscopy: spectrum, dynamics, and manipulation of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions.

We apply the chirped-pulse millimeter-wave (CPmmW) technique to transitions between Rydberg states in calcium atoms. The unique feature of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions is that they have enormous electric dipole transition moments (~5 kiloDebye at n* ~ 40, where n* is the effective principal quantum number), so they interact strongly with the mm-wave radiation. After polarization by a mm-wave pul...

Molecular physics. Production of trilobite Rydberg molecule dimers with kilo-Debye permanent electric dipole moments.

Permanent electric dipole moments are important for understanding symmetry breaking in molecular physics, control of chemical reactions, and realization of strongly correlated many-body quantum systems. However, large molecular permanent electric dipole moments are challenging to realize experimentally. We report the observation of ultralong-range Rydberg molecules with bond lengths of ~100 nan...

Time-dependent electron interactions in double Rydberg wave packets.

We investigate the time-dependent evolution of a nonstationary three-body Coulomb system at energies just below the threshold for three-body breakup. Experimentally, short-pulse lasers excite two electrons in Ba to radially localized Rydberg wave packets with well-defined energy and angular momentum. Time-dependent interactions between the two electrons are probed using half-cycle electric fiel...

Ionization of Rydberg wave packets by subpicosecond, half-cycle electromagnetic pulses.

We have studied the ionization of Rydberg wave packets by subpicosecond, nearly unipolar electromagnetic field pulses, in the regime where the duration of the electric field is less than the classical Kepler orbit time 2pn3 for the wave packet. In contrast to the subpicosecond optical pulses, subpicosecond field pulses can ionize wave packets when the probability density near the inner turning ...
